Reflective Essay #1
Out
of all the comic book heroes out there, my favorite superhero is Spider-Man. He
is my favorite because he is a nerd, like me, who gains super abilities and
fights crime in New York with words left behind by his Uncle Ben. I’m also like
Batman in the sense that spiders scare me more than anything else and I embrace
that and want to become Spider-Man. He also has some of the best villains to
fight such as Green Goblin, Doc Octopus, and Venom because they all have a
connection to Peter Parker and they all have great costumes that really stand
out to me.
I
remember once when I was about 11 years old and the Spider-Man movie with Tobey
Maguire and Kirsten Dunst came out and I saw how Spider-Man and Green Goblin
fought for the first time and that made me want to become him because of how
amazing the battle was and how he saved Mary Jane making her fall for Spidey in
the process. Those costumes and how those actors portrayed their characters
really brought out the comic book reader in me wanting to become more than just
a nerd and become a hero for the city.
Looking
back to the Loeb & Morris article, to solve a problem by asking, “What
Would Spider-Man do?” I thought about how when seeing someone being abused in
some way, I would do as Spider-Man does and try to help in some way, hopefully
in words, and save whoever was in trouble. But as Uncle Ben says, “With great
power comes great responsibility” which means that whatever decision I make has
a direct outcome on not just my life, but whoever’s I would be helping at the
time. That quote still stays with me to this day because it is very true for
any individual and I believe in its power that helps give people something to
believe in.
